The Reel Film Stars

The Sun is out again and I'm back to thinking about something I have always loved about sitting down to watch a good movie. Film Sets. The design and styling of film set can add so much to a story an tell us so much about a character. In a way set designers have it easy in that how the set is lit and how it is filmed add so much to the atmosphere. Usually in commercial interior design we don't get access to such sophisticated lighting techniques.

To kick things off lets share the work of the man I regard as the Master, the Berlin born Designer Ken Adam. Adam worked on the sets and marshaled the whole design look of the James Bond movies. Lets pause here and have a look at some of his best work, a piece of design in the style we can call Cold War Modern. The film is Thunderball. The Spectre meeting room in this clip has everything needed for an ultra high power conclave, including a removal device we all would like during some less than exciting meetings.

On the more domestic front have a look at Dr. No's lair in a style Adam himself called "tongue in cheek spectacular" This room could easily be from a photo shoot in any recent copy of Wallpaper or Frame

Also look here to hear the man himself talk about his work on Stanley Kubric's Dr. Strangelove

I intend to return to this subject so let me know what your favourite sets are.
